Congratulations to ICIS Secretary Susan Carpenter who has just received the Robert L. Sinsheimer Chair in molecular biology to continue promoting nucleic acid research at UC Santa Cruz. Susan’s appointment follows Professor Emeritus Harry F. Noller, who’s work has led to fundamental changes in our thinking about the role of RNA in the many steps of protein synthesis, and who held the position since 1987.

Susan Carpenter has been a member of the International Cytokine and Interferon Society (ICIS) since 2013, having first become aware of the society as a graduate student. She attends all the Cytokines Annual meetings together with her students and postdocs and was elected Secretary of the Society in 2022. In 2017 she was awarded the Christina Fleischmann Award for Excellence in Interferon & Cytokine Research.

Congratulations Susan!

The Christina Fleischmann Award for Excellence in Cytokine & Interferon Research

Dr. Christina Fleischmann (1945 - 1996)

This award is made possible through the generosity of the Fleischmann Family and is dedicated to the memory of ISICR member and outstanding interferon research scientist Christina Fleischmann. The award was established in early 1998, with the first award presented to Xiaoxia Li, PhD, at the joint ISICR/ICS meeting in Jerusalem. Professor Li went on to win the Seymour & Vivian Milstein Award for Excellence in Interferon & Cytokine Research in 2013. The Christina Fleischmann Award is open to young women investigators working in cytokine, chemokine and interferon biology. ICIS members who will attend the upcoming annual conference and who have received a Ph.D within the previous 10 years or their MD degree (plus residency training) within the last 14 are eligible, but may be extended by 1 year due to parental leave (per child). Applications should clearly state the start and end of residency training. More
