British playwright Tom Stoppard got it right when he said, “It’s not the voting that’s democracy; it’s the counting.”  Some of you may recall a few questions about the final results of last year’s “Cytokine Bracket.” The 2024 edition of the King of Pathogens Memorial Cytokine Bracket has resolved those issues. Scan the QR code to vote.

And while you’re at it, if you are an ICIS member take a moment to vote in the ICIS leadership elections. Also on the ballot is a proposal to amend the number and responsibilities of some Standing Committees listed in the Bylaws.

Ballots were emailed to all members on July 1 with a reminder on July 10th, directly from ElectionBuddy.com. If you didn’t receive yours, please contact the ICIS office.

Voting for ICIS Leadership and a change to the Bylaws is open from July 1 – 31, 2024. All ICIS Members in good standing are eligible and encouraged to vote and exercise your right to determine the future of the International Cytokine and Interferon Society.

Council and Nominations Committee Election

The strength of the International Cytokines & Interferon Society (ICIS) lies in the dedication of those who generously contribute their time and expertise as volunteers. Each year the members of ICIS are asked to elect members of the governing council and nominations committee. These important positions determine the goals and direction of the Society and oversee its affairs and activities.

The open positions this year are:

  • One (1) Secretary (an officer of the corporation)
  • Two (2) Council Members
  • One (1) Council Member for Inclusion and Training
  • Two (2) Nominations Committee Members

Proposed Bylaws Changes

Occasionally, members are also asked to vote on changes to the Bylaws of the Society. The Bylaws are essentially the agreement between the organization and its members. They are the rules for internal organization and governance, including the definitions and responsibilities of officers, directors and members. Amendments can be made as necessary, but should be infrequent to avoid complexity and confusion.

This year there is a proposal on the ballot to reduce the number of Standing Committees and modify their responsibilities as stated in the bylaws to better fit the current needs of the society. The amendments were proposed to the Council in March 2024, reviewed and approved in June. They are now placed before the membership for ratification.
