Yanick Crow in the lab

The following interview was conducted by Signals+ Editor Maialen Sebastian-delaCruz, Ph.D. Connect with her on LinkedIn.

The best life/career advice I have ever received was, “The harder you work, the luckier you get.”

In the Crow Lab, we are interested in human monogenic diseases associated with chronically enhanced production of type I interferons – the so-called type I interferonopathies. The study of these ‘type I interferonopathies’ provides insights into immunological homeostasis, mechanisms of self/non-self-discrimination and viral immunity. Thus, improved understanding of disease pathogenesis has suggested targeted approaches to the treatment of some of these devastating disorders. Furthermore, our work has led to the introduction of multiple diagnostic tests used in patient care worldwide.

Let’s start with your name, degree, where you currently work, and position.
Yanick Crow, MD, Phd; I am a group leader at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, Edinburgh and the Institute Imagine, Paris

Where did you do your training?
I went to medical School in Newcastle upon Tyne (think Sting of the Police, and the Knopflers of Dire Straits), and then did a PhD in Leeds (think Alan Bennett and David Hockney (sort of)).

Briefly, what is your research about?
We are interested in human monogenic diseases associated with chronically enhanced production of type I interferons – the so-called type I interferonopathies.

Tell us your thoughts about the ICIS: how has being involved in the Cytokine Society helped your career?
Well, it’s truly great to be among people with common interests, and it was a real privilege to receive a 2024 ICIS prize from such esteemed colleagues.

Are there any particular friendships or collaborations that came specifically out of Cytokines meetings?
My first – I felt like I had stumbled across a secret club of fellow individuals with a guilty habit i.e. an unusual fascination with interferons! I had thought that I was alone……

What Cytokines meeting(s) have been your favorites? Tell us about any special memories or anecdotes.
See above.

What do you like to do when not in the lab?
I’m getting old – I just sleep.

What is the best life/career advice you’ve ever received?
The harder you work, the luckier you get.

What book or TV show are you reading/watching right now that you recommend?
Well, I’m a softie, and I really fell for “One day” this year – set in my current home city of Edinburgh.

What is your favorite cytokine?
Do you really have to ask? 🙂
