Ilja Striz graduated from the Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. During his subsequent affiliation at the Institute of Chest Diseases in Prague, he completed his Ph.D. and obtained clinical certifications in Internal Medicine and Medical Immunology. Following a visit to the Ruhrlandklinik in Essen, Germany in 1990, he worked at the Pulmonary and Critical Care Department of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, USA (1993-1995).

Currently, Ilja Striz serves as the head of the Department of Clinical and Transplant Immunology at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM). He is also a Professor of Immunology at the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague and holds the positions of Vice-President in the Czech Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology and the Czech Immunological Society. His research interests primarily focus on cytokine interactions of innate immune cells, particularly macrophages and epithelial cells. In addition to transplant immunology, he is involved in projects related to autoimmune or allergic diseases.
