Lab offenses call for food

Lab offenses call for food Maintaining positive interactions among personnel is crucial to managing a laboratory. As laboratories become more crowded, personality conflicts inevitably arise and when they do, the entire staff may suffer from increased stress and tension. Here, I report on a unique method–the Food Offense — for [READ MORE]

IL-9: From Birth to Breath – ICIS-sponsored session at 2024 FOCIS focuses on the mysterious cytokine IL-9

Although IL-9 was first described in the late 1980s, its regulation and functions are still not well defined. Initially identified as a mast cell and T cell growth factor, IL-9 was subsequently reclassified as a type 2 cytokine after extensive data implicated it in atopic dermatitis, food allergy, and allergic asthma. Enthusiasm for the role of IL-9 in allergy peaked in the mid-2010s and then waned after two negative trials of IL-9-blocking antibodies in asthma. Over the subsequent decade, however, additional data emerged implicating IL-9 as a major player in autoimmunity and antitumor immunity.

To highlight this renaissance in IL-9 biology, the ICIS will be hosting a symposium at the 2024 FOCIS Annual Meeting. The symposium, entitled “IL-9: from birth to breath” will be held on June 18, 2024 – immediately before the FOCIS Opening Keynote Address. A series of short talks will cover the multifaceted roles of IL-9 across a broad range of human diseases, as well as basic mechanisms regulating IL-9 expression in various microenvironments. Introducing Keynote Speakers for the Upcoming Cytokines 2024 & KAI 2024 Joint Meeting

Dr. Judith Allen is a professor of Immunobiology at the University of Manchester. The Allen laboratory investigates the host immune response to parasite infection with a focus on type 2 immunity, the response mammals characteristically make to large multicellular parasites (helminths). Nobel Laureate Dr. Drew Weissman is a professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Weissman, in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Dr. Katalin Karikó, discovered the ability of modified nucleosides in RNA to suppress activation of innate immune sensors and increase the translation of mRNA containing certain modified nucleosides. Some dermatological disorders such as atopic dermatitis, alopecia areater, and vitiligo have few treatments available due to the lack of effective medications currently on the market. However, this might change soon with the formation of a new biotech entity called Alys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. that launched on 12th of February. It started with a substantial 100-million-dollar investment from Medicxi, the European healthcare investment fund, with the goal of transforming the treatment paradigm for several dermatology indications of significant prevalence and major unmet need. Alys, based in Boston and Geneva, is the combination of the assets and platforms of Aldena Therapeutics, Graegis Pharmaceuticals, Granular Therapeutics, Klirna Biotech, Nira Biosciences and Vimela Therapeutics, and has a world class leadership team that brings together experts across dermatology and advanced scientific fields. Member Highlight Interview with Mark Travis, Ph.D.

Mark Travis (Univ. of Manchester) is not an immunologist by training…. I did my BSc in Biochemistry and Genetics at Lancaster University, then a PhD in Protein Biochemistry at the University of Manchester, working on how integrins bind to ligands and signal. I then did my post-doc at UCSF, where I started working on integrins that bind and activate the cytokine TGF-beta. I made a conditional knockout mouse while I was there that got an intestinal inflammation phenotype, so I quickly morphed into becoming a mucosal immunologist…. which I have been ever since. Member Highlight Interview with Irini Sereti, MD, MHS.

In both the clinic and the lab, I study inflammatory complications in people with HIV and the impact of CD4 lymphopenia in HIV and other conditions, specifically a rare disorder of unclear etiology called idiopathic CD4 lymphopenia (ICL). Lots of work on biomarkers and immune-based therapies in these conditions hence my affinity for cytokines. I currently work at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and am the incoming chief of the Laboratories of Immunoregulation and Molecular Microbiology.
